Before, during and after the apocalypse:
Nostalghia, The Sacrifice & Stalker
Tarkovsky

"If Nostalghia looks towards the apocalypse, and The Sacrifice
dramatises what happens at its brink Stalker is a film which
occurs after the apocalypse has happened."

Tarkovsky, Sculpting in Time:
"People have often asked me what the Zone is, and what is symbolises,
and have put forward wild conjectures on the subject. I’m reduced to
a state of fury and despair by these questions. The Zone doesn’t
symbolise anything, any more than anything else does in my films:
the zone is a zone, it's life, and as he makes his way across it
a man may break down or he may come through. Whether he comes
through or not depends on his own self-respect, and his capacity to
distinguish between what matters and what is merely passing."
So. In this ambiguous, yet ultimately redeeming light, the one crucial thing to
remember, and beyond remembering, taking to heart, and beyond taking to
heart, a stepping up to action, the one crucial thing is the asymmetry of
responsibility. And, since we cannot tell in advance, who among us is the
other, this means that you have to start. And I need to reciprocate, by giving
you more than you hoped for. And then you have to carry some of that
surplus, some of that would be abundance, and grace someone else,
forgive yourself as well as the other, and carry their burden for a while.
This is not optional. This is required.
"The Other is the very light and wondrousness of the world."
Since you are the other, and I am the other for you, this is mandatory.
Which is why we need to keep all explanations just a little bit ambiguous,
and be willing to go an extra mile, including the road less travelled for lack
of clear direction. Chances are it will not only be worth it, but will make
all the difference in the world.
Falling through all of the passing, all the ephemeral, and falling into what deeply matters.
